A friend of mine showed me the new issue of Vanity Fair for May 2007. She thought that I would be interested because it is their second annual green issue. This magazine is full of articles about the enviornment. And guess who is on the cover? The one and only Leonardo DiCaprio, if you have read my past blog about him, I am sure that you that he is quite the environmental activist. If you are not a fan of Leo, there is still much more in this edition of Vanity Fair that may be worthwhile for you to read.
For example, their is an article entitled “Rush to Judgement” by James Wolcott. The subtitle or lead in for this article reads, “Attacking environmentalists as hippie- dup “wackos” who care more about spotted owls than people who use polar bears for propoganda, Rush Limbaugh has blinded millions of Americans to the climate crisis.” This article proceeds to discuss of the refusal of many Americans to believe in global warming has been as a result partly of Limbaugh. Wolcott said, ” Global warming’s most popular denialist, talk radio’s most intimidated showman, conservitism’s minister of disinformation, he has injected millions of semivacant American skulls with a cream filling of complaceny that has helped thrust this country into the forefront of backwards leadership.” As you may be able to tell from that excerpt, Wolcott is a firm believer in global warming and he is very upset by the number of Americans who are doubting it. When we discussed global warming in class, we talked about how many people do not believe that it is a real issue, even though it is accepted in the scientific community. Other articles that you may be interested in reading are: An article writted by Robert F. Kennedy Jr. about his love for falcons and how the energy industry is threatening their exsistence, an interesting article about Prince Charels and how he is an environmental hero, and an article that relates to the ecological footprint lab that we did in class. I found all of these articles to be very interesting and all of them somehow relate to class discussions whether it is about global warming, enviromental stewardship or ecological footprints. I highly suggest buying a copy of the May 2007 edition of Vanity Fair or visiting www.vanityfair.com.

I blogged about a similar topic, though my article was from Glamour magazine. Articles about global warming seem to be the new trend in fashion magazines, and I definately approve! As for the global warming environmentalists, I know one of them, and I can proudly say that I defeated him in one of our heated debates. I think that these people are misinformed, or perhaps not informed at all. Hopefullly these magazine articles will create a wave of new information that perhaps many people never even knew about.
I found this magazine sitting on the coffee table in my living room and was immediately intrigued by the cover…then by the article titles! I think it’s great that huge enterprises like Glamour and Vanity Fair are showing that they care about environmental issues. We have to admit that the public seems to be influenced the most by pop culture, and talking about the environment seems to be slipping more and more into television, magazines, and movies. Hopefully more people will pick up these magazines and instead of flipping through to look at pictures, will learn from the information-filled articles.
I definitely agree that this is an awesome way of spreading the word about how detrimental global warming could be. I mean how else could they easily target teenage girls on an issue that they usually would show no interest in. If they see it in their favorite magazine though, it just might mean something.
